How It Was Done:

The Actor-Based Screenwriting Process

Project Panopticon was written as a co-operation between the director and the actors. From the starting point the focus of the project was simple: to produce a film with as natural acting as possible. To achieve this goal, the director and the actors met each other every week in workshops that lasted for three months.

During the workshops they not only wrote the screenplay, but also rehearsed the scenes in order to get a natural feeling into the scenes, testing out new ideas and discarding old ones. The starting point was the theme of authenticity, yet everything else was constructed together based on the capasity of the actors.

The theory of acting was based on the writings of Konstantin Stanislavski, Judith Weston and David Mamet, with a bonus influence from Bertolt Brecht. The theories of writing included various influences from big names like McKee, Vogler and of course, Aristotles. In terms of directing, the writings of Andrey Tarkovsky (The Sculpture in Time, 1989) and Sidney Lumet (Making Movies, 1980) were a great influence.

Unfortunately we don't have a translated version of the thesis work yet. You can read the the thesis work 'Ensemble elokuvakäsikirjoituksen lähtökohtana' (Ensemble as The Basis for Writing a Film Screenplay) in Finnish here:
